The village called Kadiyapattinam is a fisherman village and the people seemed
to be poor. The women were depending upon the income earned by their
husbands all the way through fishing. After the horrible Tsunami they lost their
belongings and the burden of their family fell on the head of their women. They
were struggling to feed their children.
Knowing the real situation our staffs entered into the villages, explained and the
benefits of our programme. They all were very eager to know about us and

M. Maheswari is a 35 years old women living in remote village called P.P. Kulam
at Kadambadi block. She has three children and all are studying in the school.
Her husband is daily labourer and earns very little for the family. She found
difficult to support her family with her husband earning. So she joined in the
women self help group organized a year back. She is attending the group
meeting regularly and expresses her views to solve the problems existing in her
village. Her involvement in her group brought a grade to her group after the
evaluation.

I am Latha from the Village Kamatchiammal Koil. I was living in a hut with my husband, 2 children and mother-in-law. Being landless and with no assets life was really a struggle for us. Our earnings have seldom been enough to meet the family’s day-to-day needs. We never stopped dreaming of a more secure and contented life. But our minds have always been preoccupied with survival. Three years ago Delasalle Brothers started a saving and credit group for women in our village. I also joined the group. Joining the group has proved to be a turning point in my life.

Me llamo Valli. Mi marido murió hace tres años dejándome a mi con mis tres niños huérfanos. Estábamos viviendo en Periyakulam, en la ribera, en una cabaña, sin ninguna fuente de ingresos. En febrero de 2003, los Hermanos de La Salle vinieron para patrocinar a varias familias como la nuestra. Se han construído 8 casas para nosotros.Pero carecíamos de necesidades básicas como agua potable y electricidad.

Eso nos permitía tener una vida feliz y honrada. Aunque no había recibido una educación adecuada, tanto su conducta como su actitud eran loables.
